Castel del Monte - Puglia - Italy

Rivera winery was founded by Sebastiano de Corato in the late 1940s, inspired by a vision of capitalizing and bringing to the world’s attention the great viticultural potential of the Mugia hills, overlooked by the astonishing Castel del Monte medieval castle, in northern Apulia. Widespread recognition quickly followed and Rivera became the benchmark of the region’s quality wine production and the force driving its rebirth, thanks to further innovations in both vineyards and winemaking introduced by his son Carlo. With the involvement of the third generation of the family with Carlo’s sons Sebastiano and Marco, Rivera continues with new energy in the crafting of wines that are true to their wonderful land. The 75 hectares of estate vineyards, planted partly at altitudes of 160-180 metres in calcareous-tufa soils, and part in the rocky soils of the Murgia at 320-350 metres, yield native grape varieties, such as Bombino Bianco, Bombino Nero, Nero di Troia, Montepulciano, Primitivo and Aglianico, but international varieties as well, such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc. Rivera winemaking is thus firmly rooted into the local, terroir, but, at the same time, is in tune with the changing demands of world markets.
